This class is structured to explore the material, methodology and technique needed to begin oil painting with little to no experience! ALL levels welcome!

The Fundamentals of Oil Painting Workshop package is $375 discounted from the single session at $70.00 per session.

FOR 6 WEEKS PROGRAM: PLEASE SEE **FULL COURSE* Adult Oil Paint Fundamentals Workshop ON CALENDAR

 Includes standard size canvas panel, paint, medium, scrap canvas paper, brushes, easel set-up, clean up and 2 hours of instruction.

Please note that all classes must be reserved in advance and are subject to availability. Individual classes may be canceled due to insufficient enrollment 24 hours prior to event.

Includes ALL materials and 2 hours of instruction. Each workshop will include at least 30 minutes of demonstration and at most 90 minutes of individual work with guidance from our instructor! Please know that you will be working on 1 personal project throughout the course due to the dry time of oil painting.

This workshop is designed to build on your personal project each week where you will use the lessons to further advance your painting. Therefore, it is important to commit to each weekly session to ensure you are advancing your painting with the class. However, we do accept single sessions if you wish to join for a day. Please be aware that if you chose a single session that the instructor will be keeping to the schedule. 

ALL Levels. 

4/11/24 & 5/23/24 – Introduction of Painting Composition:

This class begins with a 30min lecture on compositional painting components such as color, shape, light/shadow, foreground/background, and building perspective. Following the discussion, students will create a Grisaille/underpainting to showcase what they have learned.

Following the Grisaille will be a second 30min lesson on what makes oil paint different from other paint, technically correct oil paint application and the different styles of paint application. Using a simple color palette, students will then begin painting with Chiaroscuro techniques to build a light source on their Grisaille!

With the remaining time we will begin the foundation of the student’s personal project.

4/18/24 & 5/30/24 – Knowing Your Material

Students will learn how to use medium and solvent, how these affect the paint/canvas, and challenges/solutions unique to oil painting. This workshop includes glazing and other technical application of mediums. Following the demonstration, student’s will work on personal project’s from underpainting.

4/25/24 & 6/6/24 – Color Mixing:

Students will learn how to properly mix colors, the pigmentation effects of oil, and technical application of paint according to color scale unique to oil painting. We will demonstrate challenges and solutions oriented around color mixing by making a color wheel. Students will learn techniques such as Sfumato, Blocking and Blending.
Following the the lesson, we will build a color palette specific to each personal project and begin adding to color each painting.

5/2/24 & 6/13/24– Brush Strokes:

Students will learn how to achieve different styles and effects through brush strokes and different brush types as well as how holding the brush effects the strokes. During this time we will have the students practice Scumbling, dry brush, fanning, stippling and other effects. After the lesson we will be building on the student’s personal project by enhancing their details with brush strokes.

5/9/24 & 6/20/24 – Palette Knives:

Students will learn how to achieve different styles and effects through palette knives and, depending on their style, when they would want to use a palette knife. During this time we will have the students practice Impasto, blocking and Alla Prima in both brushes and palette knives to explore the different tools effects. After the lesson we will be building on the student’s personal project.

5/16/24 & 6/27/24 – Personal project:

Utilizing what they’ve learned in previous classes, students will be focusing on bringing their personal project to a finish. They will continue to receive advice from the instructor on the techniques necessary to express what they want to paint.
